Mason Middle School (U14 Field)
We will cover rules, basic umpire mechanics, positioning, gear, attitude, and attire.

MBSC is a PONY affiliated league and uses the rules as follows: The Official Rules of MLB, PONY Rules, and MBSC Rules. MBSC Rules by age group are on our web-site at: www.masonpony.org

. We encourage all of our umpires to register with PONY. Please do your best to know the MBSC rules, as our rules are similar to MHSAA, but not all the same.Dress Code:
Umpire Shirt (Light or Dark Blue), Gray Slacks, Black Shoes, Dark Blue Hat, Black Belt, No Hometown ClothingUmpire Gear:
Helmet/Face Guard, Chest Protector, Shin Guards, Balls & Strikes Counter, Ball Bag, Copy of Rules. I will try to assist Mason umpires with gear, so if you need something, are new to umping and want to try it out, I have some gear to loan, so e-mail me and I will try to get you some gear.How I assign umpires:
By email, by experience, by reliability.
If you are not reliable, I will assign other umpires your games.Field Locations:

Show up to the field 20-30 minutes prior to game time. Umpire meeting prior to game:
Discuss age group rules, field of play, all players properly and legally equipped, etc.Coach Conduct / Player Conduct: / Spectator Conduct / Ejections:
First, do not allow game to continue until ejected is gone. Players, coaches, and spectators, ejected are ejected for remainder of game and next game. Please e-mail me all ejections, with an explanation, so I can discuss it with the board.Pitching Inning / Pitch Count:
You may be asked to sign or look at score books, prior to, during, and/or after game, as PONY is moving towards pitch counts.Sliding rule:
Base runners must slide or avoid contact at every base, so as to avoid a collision if the defensive player has or would
have had possession of the ball in order to make a play. The slide must be a legal foot first or headfirst slide. Runners in violation will be called out and also receive a warning or an ejection from the game if in the umpire's judgment it was a flagrant attempt to cause injury. The 2nd violation will be an automatic ejection from the game.Mercy Rule:

Usually 2 hours and games can end in a tie.
